How A Fume Hood Works

First, let's understand what a fume hood is. Simply put, it's a device used to extract certain components (such as toxic gases) or other suspended particulate matter from the air within a specific area. Its primary function is to create a negative pressure zone within a sealed space, allowing surrounding air to be drawn into it. When the contaminated air passes through a filter or adsorbent material, the harmful substances are removed; the clean air is then exhausted out the other side. This method not only effectively reduces the risk of cross-infection caused by indoor and outdoor air exchange, but also maintains pressure balance within the laboratory, preventing the intrusion of dust and debris from outside and affecting the accuracy of experimental results. Furthermore, for flammable and explosive materials, the use of local exhaust fans for forced ventilation is crucial to prevent safety accidents caused by oxygen deprivation. Therefore, fume hoods are an indispensable part of our daily lives.
